Molly
I took my youngest to the park today for some fun and ended up with 6 pounds of free plums! This park used to be an orchard, and they left a grove of plum trees. They are overgrown and not tended, but this year they had loads of plums. The low ones had been picked, but we scrounged around in the tall grass for the nicest, firmest windfall plums and easily found plenty for us and for grandma. It took half an hour and we got bonked on the head by flying fruit a few times, but it was fun and we got our reward! It’s sad to see that so many go to waste. Hopefully someone comes by with a very long-handled fruit picker.
If you see fruit trees in your parks it doesn’t hurt to call and ask if picking is allowed! Also, windfall fruit is often awesome and lots of people offer it up for free!
MichelleWhen you go back bring a sheet underneath and give the trunk a shake to get fresh ones to drop.
KathyBe very careful on picking fruit off the ground.

DebThey never really go to waste.
You have birds, squirrels, mice, other animals and insects not to mention the nitrogen and other nutrients that are put into the soil to make the seeds and other plants grow.
