I went to visit my mom and she’s doing well, getting by and by. I took her out to the movies and she remarked how she hadn’t been to the movies since the last time I took her, which was about a year ago.

So before I left I bought her a gift card. Told her about senior discounts and $5 Tuesdays. I also gave her access to my theater account which gives discounts on food and I can reload her gift card when it runs out.

Knowing how frugal my mom is she’ll probably stretch it for almost the whole year but it was so wonderful when she called me today to tell me that she went to go see a movie. (The theater is literally less than a mile from her which is great.!) She was so happy. She lives alone and I live on the other side of the state. She’s extremely independent, very frugal so I figured I’d splurge on something that she would consider a luxury. And she’s super excited to learn all the ways to be frugal with her gift.

This may not be a frugal move for me, but it’s worth it’s weight in gold for me to hear her so happy and excited.

Your mom is blessed to have you as a daughter. My husband and I had five kids and they don’t care about us. They are all doing well financially and forget us on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day or any day for that matter. I guess they were hatched.

Excellent! It’s so important for older people to get out. Her mental health is worth any amount of money. I’d give anything to have my mom back.

Parents love this kind of things from their grown children. Everything you do for your elderly parents will cover you on your elderly days. You will cherish these days as much as your mother does!

That’s AWESOME But I’m confused you both look so young which one of you is the mother? Doing this for your mother made her very happy.

That is awesome of you! I lost my mom during covid and could not even be there for her funeral. It often saddens me when I think of the missed opportunities that I will never be able to make up. There is nothing more precious than making your parents happy. You are a blessing and she will never forget your kind deed.

Great idea! I encourage my family to give my mother vouchers for the hair dresser she uses, taxi cards etc, rather than gifts that will go into the back of the wardrobe! Elderly people are often over supplied with slippers, gift sets etc, and a luxury of their choice is more valuable. A gift card for their super market also allows them to choose their own luxuries!

You know she is bragging about you to everyone! Another gift my parents like is I pay their rent about 5 times a year. It gives them a little breathing room. They are in subsidized housing so the amount does not put a burden on my budget.

Being frugal doesn’t mean you can’t be thoughtful to others. My boyfriend never spends on himself, but for his family and those closest to him – he is generous.

Iost my mom 11 years ago, so adopted my elderly neighbor that was good friends with my mom. I take her places, it’s my enjoyment helping her out, and helps out her family sense they all work long hours. She has some medical issues going on, and we know she may not be with us for long, so I take her to do whatever she wants. Things i truely wish I could have done with my mom. So yes every day is special and we need to make the most of it.

You did a lovely thing for your mom. Why worry about being frugal. Everyone would like a daughter like you.

A penny for food and two for the soul. Being frugal is taking care of your health. I don’t know any more healthy thing than the joy of making someone who has given you so much in the past happy and in making them happy you lengthen and enrich their lives

Frugal doesn’t mean not spending money. Frugal means not being wasteful and getting the most from your money. The enjoyment your mom will get from this is amazing and definitely a good thing.
