Hi – I’ve been at a startup for 2 yrs and am comfy. I’m  stagnant but didn’t pursue anything new since the tech layoffs were scary.

I was recruited with a significant raise and chunky sign on bonus at a competitor. I like our product more but the competitors leadership (incl my team) has a more impressive background hauling from FAANG and equivalent tech + consulting companies.

Now my current company wants to match all that and more, like giving me a promotion, more budget for conferences (which was non-existent before) so I can grow more.

Since we’re on a hiring freeze there really isn’t another way for me to “grow” outside of total comp. I’m thinking conferences can’t replace learning from a new team / company / mentor.

For long-term career benefits (eventually more $$$), would you stay or would you go?

I’m leaning towards leaving as but am wondering if 2 years wasn’t enough time to give to a company.

If you like the company you are at it’s up to you. You will never mitigate all risk whatever your decision but one thing to consider is when layoffs happen “usually” the newer folks are the first to go.

Go. 2-3 years is fine if you’re not looking at being there long term anyhow.

Never, ever accept a counter offer.
