I was recently a victim of an online scam, and purchased an item from a fake vendor. I never received the item, did a little research and realized many other people were in my same situation. I immediately contacted my credit card company, put in a fraud claim and was reimbursed for the purchase.
However, when I asked the representative to help me get a new credit card number and freeze my current card, she told me I was absolutely free to do so, but she recommended NOT changing the card number due to the hassle it causes having to switch over so many auto bill accounts, etc, AND that if a vendor contacted them with my name and info they would be required to give them my new credit card number.
This sounded absurd to my husband and I, and I was wondering if anyone else had ever heard anything like this before?
Additionally we are looking into new credit card companies and considering closing this account all together. What are your favorite credit cards with the best cash back bonuses?
This current card was getting us 2percent cash back on all purchases.
CristinaThe representative is absolutely WRONG!!
We were scammed or hacked a couple of times and the bank has always issued a new card, that’s a mandatory procedure.
ChantalThis happened to us where someone bought a 5k mattress with our card. We closed the card immediately and was able to get a new card within a few days.
It is a hassle to update bills but it’s worth that peace of mind knowing your old card is closed and not out there anymore.
LynneI legit just canceled a card tonight. And I was told to contact all vendors and provide new info.
You must have got a new rep fresh out of training.
PeterIf you travel, search for 10xtravel. It is involved, but it is the best way to play credit card rewards game. I think Sapphire Preferred is considered the best one if you want to apply first and figure out how to play the game a bit later. And apply for the new card first, then close the one you don’t want.
