My vet is charging me $22 a month for a chew and said I have to have a yearly check up to purchase it, which is $50.

My dog recently got fleas after I had her on a topical med from tractor supply which I paid $25. Please tell me what works.

My dog is about 70 pounds.

I use seresto which is 50ish for 8 months per dog. Any bug I find in them is dead or dying. I also treat the yard and groom often which varies in price.

I also use ivermectin or the heartworm shot depending on if I am moving soon or not.

It’s not cheap, but I use Simperica trio for my dogs. It covers fleas ticks and heartworm. Heartworm is very expensive to treat so it’s best to prevent it.

The reason your vet requires a yearly check up is because the dog needs to be in good health to get the flea preventitive. Prescription flea prevention is the best, over the counter meds don’t last the whole month and all of them can give you a reaction, even if they have received it before. Prescription medications like bravecto, nextguard, trifexis, advantage mult are safer than over the counter.

If your looking for something that last a long time, bravecto last 3 months.

You really need an annual check up for your dog anyway, plus don’t they have vaccines to get?

Aside from the fact that heart worm is expensive to treat, please also remember that it is AWFUL for your dog. I mean, I don’t know what I WOULDN’T pay to not have worms clogging up MY heart. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally on board with shopping around for the best price on something that will be effective prevention, just saying don’t get so focused on price that you end up hurting your pet.)

Explore these too: Does anybody treat their yard themselves and if so what do they use that is pet friendly?

I get Bravecto in a 3mo chewable from vet. It costs $60+. Can’t remember exact price. She has to go to vet once a year anyway for vaccines and heartworm test and yearly shot.

Seresto collars. I have been using these for years and have never seen a flea or tick.

I lost a German Shephard from a spot treatment. Once it was on her skin you can’t wash it off quickly enough after a reaction and death. I now use Seresto collar on my new Shepard. We live in a rural area and have every flea and tick known to mankind. If she gets a tick, the tick dies and have had no fleas at all.
