My house was flooded on Father’s Day of this year. After a lot of arguing with insurance companies and working with contractors, we finally got to the point where we can live in our house again. The issue is, due to the length of time we’ve had our stuff packed up and the way it was packed by the contracted company, we ended up losing even more stuff than in the initial flood due to mold.
If you have any recommendations where we can get affordable but comfortable bedding, blankets, knifes, and deals for food staples (all of our food went bad except the canned stuff) it would be greatly appreciated.
SandraShouldn’t the insurance company also cover that? Reread your contract regarding contents…don’t take no for answer….if they covered the first bit, they should cover the contents etc.
*insurance companies never want to pay and have a deny, deny, deny policy, I had to go back 8 times before someone acknowledged that I did have coverage and could make the claim. You have to squeeze them to cover what you are entitled to. Review your policy and then talk to your carrier.
If they say no again, ask them to point out exactly what piece of your policy they are using to deny you.
Then go to another insurance company like you are a purchaser, and ask about that coverage, see what they say. Don’t sign off on anything.
ConnieInsurance should absolutely cover your furnishings, linens, food.. absolutely everything you lost should be covered if they covered the house for the losses of this event.. then your belongings should be covered too. Take pictures of the moldy items when you took them out of storage.. show them to the agent and file a claim.
NicoleI am so sorry to hear this 💔 I would see if you have a “Buy Nothing” FB group in your area. People may have household items they’re not using & would be happy to give them to you. My local group (in rural CT) is very active & generous, especially to those in tough situations. Otherwise I would check thrift stores for non-fabric/upholstered house stuff. For things like blankets places like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods tend to be good for deals.
AmandaThis might not help right now, but you may be entitled to get some of that stuff replaced depending on your flood coverage!
That said I love the Jersey knit sheets at Walmart, and we’re coming up on Black Friday so there may be some sales already starting! I got some half decent knives from Ross that I used (and abused) in my college apartment that I only got rid of because I moved in with my husband who has Really Nice Knives.
As for food, Kroger has 10 for $10 deals on staples, the offerings rotate but you could build up a pantry pretty easily by going every week.
