Are home made rice bags a weird gift to receive? I feel like I’d be happy to receive them. I’m trying to think of nice but home made Christmas gifts.
I have loads of fabric I’ve never done anything with.
I’ve been thinking about making some homemade rice bags as holiday gifts this year and would love to get some opinions!
The idea is to create small, heatable rice bags that friends and family could use to keep warm, ease muscle tension, or just have something cozy on a chilly winter day.
I’m considering adding some dried lavender or essential oils to make them more relaxing and comforting.
Do you think this would be a unique and appreciated gift? Or is it too simple for a Christmas present?
I’d love to hear if anyone has given or received something like this, and how it was received! Plus, any tips on making them extra special would be amazing. Thanks in advance!
KarenI made them with seed corn and each one had a removable cover. They were very well received and still being used twenty years later.
I found that the seed corn didn’t burn in the microwave as easily as the rice did and it smelled a bit like popcorn (no it didn’t pop).
PattiI made them out of fleece for coworkers over a decade ago and I know many of them still have and use them. Great gift.
BrendaMy daughter received one as a gift that looks like a crab. They called it a menstration crustacean. She loves it.
AshThey are a great idea! If you’re of a certain age, you have cramps to contend with or played too rough on boys night.
If you’re of a certain age, you always have something aching.
If you’re a parent, kids seem determined to break themselves in half so they always have a booboo somewhere.
It seems like a thoughtful gift that anyone could use at any stage in life.
JudieAbsolutely. Attach a typed sheet of how to microwave and use.
SchylerMy mil made them for my oldest kid when he was around 3 and he loved them. I believe she put some lavender in them and he liked taking it to bed.
LisaA friend has given them for Cmas and they’re very well received. II use them not just fir releasing neck tension but also plain warmth in winter.
TiffanyI think these are awesome! I’ve received one as a gift before and loved it.
JessicaI like them, just make sure it’s a good size. I received one once and it was maybe 5inches by 3 inches.
I think it’s supposed to be for your eyes but it wasn’t big enough to cover both eyes
TerryWe made tube Sox filled w rice and sewn w a pretty ribbon long ago. Mines prob 20 years old, still use it.
I would love cloth coasters.
My wooden and plastic ones stick to really cold glasses, and then sweat and then fall off.
JeanI made all my grans rice bags last year. The college age g-daughter took hers to college with her.
She is an athlete.
DianaI made those for everybody in the family one year. They loved them and were well used. I put the filling in a muslin bag and sewed it shut and then made the covers in a different fabric for each person to personalize their likes.
That way they could be washed.
Debif you can make hot pads those are always something I appreciate.
AmyI personally would adore a set of homemade reusable fabric gift bags in different sizes and different colors to use year round.
Fifteen years ago a friend of my daughter’s gave her a gift in an orange seersucker bag tied with orange Rick rack.
I have saved and reused that bag every year for her birthday.
I would love to have more of them
KariI infuse some of the rice with essential oils and put a few tablespoons into each one.
I just bought flannel today to make them, but I love the idea of making a removable cover!!!
StaceyIt is a nice gift. Maybe even pair it with a dollar tree bottle of lotion or a decorative card. I’ve gotten them as gifts and love them.
A caution: be careful if adding scents.
I’m allergic to lavender and most florals so be sure to know your person.
LaurieNot at all. Made one myself. An old tube sock. Filled with raw rice. Then microwaved to hot.
For warming aching neck, back, shoulder muscles.
ElizabethAprons, sofa arm covers with pockets for remote controls. It’s always great to get gifts that you can actually use every day.
KathyI made a lap blanket for my mother in law to use in her car. She said it’s amazing how it helps
PegI use one every night to warm my feet to fall asleep, received as a gift about ten years ago. Best gift ever
MarshaThey are wonderful also to heat up and put in the bed with you when you go to bed to warm it up. I do it all winter.
AmyRice bags would be nice. If the person has corn hole boards, corn bags would be great to have. Seems like people are always needing extras.
