Hello everyone. First time posting. Looking for guidance. My dogs are 3 years old. I have always fed them Science diet dog food.
A year ago I started making them ground beef or turkey and veggies to mix with the dry food.
That way they are getting the required products in the dry food. I started making the beef because the canned food was almost $4.00 a can.
However, my dogs are over 100lbs and it is costing me about $200 a month just for the dry food. I asked the vet and they said science diet, total canin are good but very pricey, they said Purina and kirklands dog food are good too.
My question, Costco has like 10 different brands of dog food. Does anyone here use kirklands dog food? Which one do you like?
I want to try it but they only sell 40lb bags so I wanted to see what everyone likes. It would save me about $140 a month to switch.
MarisolI work at a shelter. We use Authority, by Petsmart. For adopters, we tell them to just make sure the first ingredient is a protein and that the food isn’t a really bright color, like red. That means there are a lot of dyes that can upset their stomach. Canned is not necessary, dry works just fine unless they have health issues. There are tons of foods out there. If you want to stay high end you can also try Purina Pro Plan or Iams.
JaniceTry a Farm and Feed/Tractor Supply, they have a variety of really good dry dog foods. Especially for big dogs.
JenniferI do not have experience with Kirkland, however Purina is good, the Purina One is a great affordable option. Otherwise Purina Pro Plan will get my vote over any other brand.
JohannaAs someone who works for a vet I would avoid Kirkland brand food. We have a lot of techs that feed Iams because it’s cheaper. Not sure how price compares to purina pro plan.
JenniferWe have pugs with allergies so we feed them Kirkland’s Grain Free (salmon flavor). Some people don’t like using grain free but my vet approves and they’re doing well on it. They are all between 12 and 15 years old.
AmyI use the salmon and sweet potato kibble from Costco. Have for 12 years. I sometimes add a teaspoon of coconut oil or a bit of chopped spinach (I buy bags of frozen chopped). My dogs maintain a healthy weight and have generally good health. I have tried the other flavors, but my guys definitely prefer the salmon.
EvaI do similar- mixed domed canned food in but price doubled so I buy meat on quick sale & mix in couple Tbl & some broth. For fry food, I feed Purina One. It’s good good & one of 4 brands that are formulated with vet/nutricianates & approved by the pet food association (forgot name) the other brand is Hills & don’t remember the other 2
DonnaTractor Supply has their own brand called 4 health. We do the Salmon and potato. Tractor Supply will give you a small bag to try for free if you ask!
