OK I’m tired of the high prices for potato chips and 1/2 the bag is air! They are my one splurge/treat. Anyone make their own potato chips or have a recipe or tips on how to make them?

Have you tried the potato chips at Aldi’s? They were $1.59 today for the bag size that is $2.99 elsewhere. I like them. Just an idea. It was a 10 oz bag.

I make my own chips. Slice thin with a mandolin or food processor. Soak in water so they don’t brown and drain the excess starch. Lay them out on a towel and dry them.

          Now 2 options:
          1) Toss in oil in a bowl, season with salt and spices of choice and bake/airfry at 400/450 degrees F.
          2) Deep fry, then season to your liking, let dry on paper towels.

Don’t miss: Is there anything I can do with potatoes peels besides composting?

I pretty much always make my own chips. It keeps me from eating too many (I only make a couple of servings), and they taste better. I use a mandolin to get the slices really thin. Cook in hot oil till they stop sizzling a lot (this means the water is cooked out and they will be crisp). You don’t want the oil too hot, or they will get too dark.

We have made them a couple of times and we baked them and also did them on my husband’s blackstone griddle. Both turned out great. Just sliced a potato, patted dry, sprayed with oil, seasoned and baked until golden brown.

I only buy my chips when they go on sale and are $2 or less for a bag.

                What flavors are you into?

                I like Stax

I like Lays Sour Cream and Onion

And I can’t eat the ridges brand kind

But there are generic & store brands

                Sour cream & cheddar

Off brand sour cream & onion

I splurge on things I enjoy

                Buy in bulk

Buy the deals 3 for $3 each

Over reg price $6 a bag

The air is so you don’t just have crumbs

But in high school one of my friends family

They used potato chip crumbs as coating for baked chicken night lol

Slice super thin…my Rada knife works very well for this. Heat oil in a cast iron skillet and get to frying. Very easy but takes a long time to do a decent amount. I like it because it helps to keep from eating them too often and or too many.

I have stopped buying any bread products or snacks and am making all from scratch.

Have you seen: What have you decided to make yourself because the price finally hit a point where you’re just done?

All the time!!! Slice on a mandolin rinse in cold water to remove extra starch… place on kitchen towel and dry…cook in 350 oil…

I don’t! But my boss saved potato peels and soaked em over night and fried em the next day and they were 🔥 and I HATE potato skins . But when hot and seasoned they were so damn good

I’m all for making your own, but the reason the bag is half full is to protect the chips. If that air wasn’t there, they’d get crushed in transit and you’d open up a bag of teeny tiny crumbs.

They are sold by weight, not volume, so you’re not paying for the air.

I have made plantain chips, potatoes and sweet potatoes chips, and tortilla chips.

The plantain chips: buy the large green bananas at the supermarket. I have seen them just about everywhere, Publix, Walmart, Aldi, and ethnic food stores. Peel the banana, slice the banana into very thin like round chips. Wash them, pat dry, And fry them. I fry them in oil, have never tried to air fry these.

The potatoes and sweet potatoes. I peel them and slice them very thin too (potatoes chips like), wash them and pat dry, fry them.

The tortilla chips: I buy the whole tortilla and cut it like a pizza in slices. And fry them.
