Will you request renter to buy renter insurance? Or is it all up to the renter?

Renters often face the question of whether to purchase renters’ insurance or not.

Some believe it’s essential for protecting belongings and covering liabilities, while others see it as optional, depending on circumstances.

In your opinion, is renters’ insurance something every tenant should have, or does it depend on individual needs and preferences?

I always require renters insurance. It’s for your protection as much as theirs

I require the renter to get it. When we first started renting we had a leak in the bathroom. As they were doing demo, they found asbestos.

Our renters needed to leave the property for 4 days.

My insurance did not cover any of their displacement, nor would have covered any damage to their property. Fortunately they had family to stay with and none of their property was damaged.

Lesson learned on my part. It is so cheap for a year it is in their best interest anyway.

I strongly advise them to get it, and I give a few clear cut examples of why it’s important, but I don’t require it.

A must. The property managers are insured on the policy as well. If the renters do not present a contract in a reasonable time or cancel, a fee is added to the rent to cover the cost of the property managers providing it

So, it’s to protect the owner but the owner requires the renter to buy it? If it only protects the renter, then why it’s not up to the renter?

                        I’m confused
