For those who invested in real estate and sold to put the money into stocks/index funds, do you have any regrets?
Have you ever sold real estate to invest in stocks or index funds? If so, do you regret the decision?
I’m curious to know how this shift impacted your financial journey and overall returns.
Was it worth trading the stability of real estate for the potential gains in the stock market?
What factors influenced your choice, and in hindsight, would you have done anything differently?
Whether you’ve experienced success or faced challenges, I’d love to hear your insights and how you feel about the long-term effects of this investment strategy.
RyanSold off multi unit residential and invested it all over 5 years ago, zero regrets. The kill is in appreciation usually not monthly cash flow.
Get in, tune up the Financials pushing value higher and get out, invest the proceeds.
Has worked well for me.
Heavy re is like a second job, and I do.not want a first job. Dumped both jobs, live well…
SteveNope. Sold just before Covid and dumped it into stocks that 10x’d. Stocks don’t call at 3am when they clog the drain, don’t require painting and new floors when you switch them out, and pay on time.
JenI sold my rental property in 2021 and – while of course I could sell it for even more now – I don’t regret it for a single second.
I had amazing renters, a perfect property location, etc. but at the end of the day I felt like it just wasn’t worth the mental weight of “how is it doing when it rains?”
And other questions that come up when tenants reach out.
And sure – I could hire a property manager but then they’re just taking more of the money I’d be making.
I just couldn’t keep spending money on house upkeep – even when it was tenant money – knowing if I just put it into my own savings, brokerage, etc it would be doing better and growing.
It seemed silly. Plus, not having to worry about the phone calls, additional paperwork, taxes, etc seems so amazing.
I truly don’t miss it and am happy for people it works for – I just wasn’t one of them.
DoyleHad a military rental in Virginia with VA loan. Lived in it 7 of 20 years. Liquidated in Aug 2021.
Took every penny (profit after taxes) and bought a lot of VTI.
No regrets, none whatsoever.
MattHad a rental for as long as it worked for me. Sold it just before covid and missed getting screwed during the pandemic.
Best decision to get rid of it
PerryYes, o regret selling. With that said I am keeping the index funds for diversification and litigation protection.
JohnMy real estate funds my index funds and my stocks fund my next real estate acquisition….
