My grandson has very sensitive skin and even if you change him within minutes of a bm he breaks out we slather diaper cream but it is very expensive.
AngelI use cornstarch and it works great!
JenniferDoes he have an allergy? Possibly, dairy? The fact that his skin acts immediately makes me think something in his diet may be the real issue.
AngelAir him out. Let him go diaper free for a few hours. It’ll help tremendously.
NicoleDiaper rash is usually caused by yeast over growth. Strained plain (no sugar, no flavor) yogurt is the cure. Sounds funny, but it will fix the problem. Cornstarch may feed the yeast.
I am a midwife and clinical herbalist-this is my go to remedy.
JoyceTry good old cornstarch.
ᛗᛁᚲᚺᛖᛚᛚᛖVaseline worked wonders on my son he would get so sore that it bled and this every bum change was a lifesaver no other bum cream worked
MaundiBurnt flour is supposed to work as well. I used it years ago but can’t remember if it was successful.
RachelI would recommend Aquaphor, instead of making something since their skin is sensitive. It is pricey (you can find coupons), however, it will last forever and can be used for everything.
SarahI know not quite what you asked for, but use some mylanta on his bum before the diaper cream or put some in his diaper before you put it on.
It helps take the acid off the skin so he doesn’t get a rash and a whole bottle has lasted me more than 2 kids so far.
EllieTallow balm. My daughter has a sensitive bum and whenever it gets irritated tallow takes away the redness almost immediately.
Easy to render the fat yourself and whip it.
PattyThe very best is bag balm, (you will find it by the band aids, green can) kind of expensive but it is the best for everything.
LisaDo elimination communication. All mine were very obvious when they were going to have a bowel movement, so I just put them on a training toilet. Or would hold them over a yogurt container held between my knees sitting down. Some people start at birth, but I started at 6 weeks. I just did bowel movements, when they woke up, before we went anywhere and before bathing.
BeckyWhen my sister was tiny she suffered with nappy rash badly, the doctor told my mum to brush egg white on the skin and let it dry (I guess sort of sealing the skin) sounds odd – it was the 80s – but it worked. Might be worth trying to allow the skin long enough to heal.
RebeccaZinc oxide and cornstarch are great for little bottoms. I used to have a recipe for really bad red bottoms I’ll have to see if I can find it. Found it and shared the link on a separate comment.
MichelleWhen my son was a baby he had such bad diaper rash that I ended up having to buy surgical barrier cream. Even with immediate changing his skin would break down. I found the type of diapers made a difference as well as the type of wipe-I ended up making homemade diaper wipes and paying a little more for quality diapers. Any of the heavy “white” diaper creams worked fine along with the above mentioned diapers and wipes.
Good luck!
SueMy sons were like that too. I found out that it was anything acidic. From apple juice to ANYTHING containing tomatoes no matter how ‘watered down’ it was. Even ketchup. We switched to white grape juice 50/50 with water. Maybe it’s in his food? because I had no idea that even watered down juice etc could do that. And their tiny tender little bottoms hurt.
