Anyone have an electric vehicle? Does it make financial sense for the savings on gas? I live in California.
With the rise of electric vehicles and California’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, many drivers are considering making the switch from traditional gas-powered cars.
However, before making this change, it’s important to know if the savings on gas alone can justify the cost of purchasing and maintaining an EV.
For Californians, with factors like electricity rates, potential tax incentives, and fluctuating gas prices, do the savings on fuel truly outweigh the initial investment and ongoing expenses of owning an electric car?
How do long-term savings, including maintenance and energy costs, compare to owning a conventional vehicle?

KarenI have one. I mostly charge at home (with a level 2 charger I installed), and the difference in my electric bill is negligible.
The cost goes up if you don’t charge at home and always have to use a public charger – I’ve charged at public chargers a couple of times on road trips, and it’s a little cheaper than a tank of gas.
I also don’t pay for oil changes, transmission service, etc… IMO it’s great for around-town driving and even short road trips, but I would not get one if it were my family’s only car.
SarahI was spending $200-$400/month on gas before my EV. Now I charge at home and don’t really notice a difference in my electric bill.
No more gas station visits, no more oil changes, no more transmission or differential fluids to change, and frankly on road trips by the time I plug in, hit the bathroom, and maybe grab a drink I’m charged enough to continue.
I personally don’t see myself going back to an ICE but you need to consider where you live, if you can charge at home, etc.
LeviIf you aren’t constantly doing a lot of long trips and can charge at home we love ours. Charging at home is a must IMO. The lack of maintenance required is a game changer.
No more oil changes, transmission and even not worrying about smog. 8 year 120k mile battery warranty is also comforting.
We just started looking for a 2nd one, possibly used but they are still pricey enough we’ll likely just go new again and take advantage of that tax credit.
