I need one for my husband and one for my dad. My dad has become a minimalist in the last year. I usually get him a ball cap or shirt, but considering he threw out all but 2 of his hats, most of his t-shirts, etc. I don’t wanna get him something that he’ll view as clutter
I went ahead and just called my dad, who refused any type of gift, but after some convincing he’s gonna let me take him to brunch at our favorite local breakfast place tomorrow.
My dad is not a senior, although he’s all gray hair so people give him the senior discount without asking him.
TerryI live in Alaska and my father lived in Florida. I’m a singer and would sing one of his favorite songs. I also wrote him an old fashioned letter (in cursive writing) reliving some of my favorite times with him.
SamMy dad was always frugal and the best gift for him was to buy food and then prepare a meal with him. It was as much the time spent making the list, going to the store, preparing the food and finally enjoying the meal.
KarlaExperiences over things are sometimes the best way to go. Creates better memories.
SusanIf your dad has a house, making him a Garden Rock is a fun and personal gift. Find a rock of any size. Paints are 50 cents at Walmart. Acrylic spray to waterproof.
CoralExperiences and consumables are the way to go!
SheilaFrom experience, Senior adults, especially if they are trying to live on SSI don’t need stuff. They need things like, pay their electric bill, get them gift cards they can use for food, and visits from their family.
LaurelConsumable favorites and/
Or memory making time
– seasonal tickets or even just a pair for you and he to enjoy together.
My dad loves the sausage from local place near me… and I’ll also get some of the Italian to make some really good spaghetti that can be frozen in meal sized portions – he’s taken over household duties – as my mom has dementia & cooking meals is new to him …CandyMy husbands parents just like a meal or a special desert and us to just sit and visit while we eat. We often take the kids and grandkids and I cook whatever they ask for.
ColleenFor dad, Give gifts that get used up. Eg gift cards to his fav restaurant. His favorite meals for his freezer, etc
KymmYour time spent with him is priceless.
JohelenGo around and take pictures of cute hats or shirts you would get him. Shirts with fun sayings or funny hats.
Present a little (virtual) picture album…here dad, these are the presents I would have gotten you, but I did this instead.
Be sure the first picture is a picture of the front and inside of a card.
I think he’ll love it. He can look it on his phone whenever he wants.
StephanieWhat always works for my father in law, who doesn’t ask for much: a Tupperware full of his favorite homemade cookies.
NikkiA card with a bunch of IOU’s inside. Your dad could include IOU’s for things like a homemade meal, father daughter brunch, 1 hr of housework, mowing the lawn…things like that. Your husband could have IOU’s for things like a movie n beer night but he gets to choose the movie, foot massage/back massage, romantic dinner, free car wash by you…you get the idea.
RoseComing from a senior who downsized a year ago, get a gift card for his favorite coffee shops wherever he meets his friends. I see senior men at McDonalds and Panera meeting for coffee and playing cards.
DebThis is what my daughter is gifting…
Her dad: new hey dudes and exotic jerky [I’m gifting him a new shirt and all the Kinder’s sauces] – both the shoes and the shirt replace ones that are worn out.
Her father in law – a custom designed hoodie, the sweetest photo she took of him with his son, and bag of cinnamon bears [his favorite] – we’re gifting him exotic jerky.
Her grandfather in law – his favorite jelly beans from Costco and exotic jerky.
BrendaIf he has a bird feeder give him bird seed. That’s what my daughter gives her dad and he loves it. Loves to just sit at the kitchen table and look out the window at his feeders.
PamelaGet your dad tickets to an event, take him out for dinner, or give him a gift card to his favorite restaurant.
BarbaraIf he lives near, take him out for lunch or coffee or ice cream.
KristieDads like massages, good haircuts/ beard trims , and pedicures, too!
For low cost options- a quality nail care kit ( my dad still has the one my Uncle got him back in the 1970s)
Beard oil – lots of great options!
Microwaveable heat pack for sore muscles.
NancyLove that called dad and said he wants to do brunch with you. Enjoy the time. Missing my dad. And glad he doesn’t want ‘stuff” working myself on moving things on out of our house.
