I’m planning a mermaid-themed birthday party for my 5-year-old, but I’m on a tight budget. Can anyone share some inexpensive mermaid party ideas and DIY decorations? I want to make it special for my little one without breaking the bank. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
NoraWatch The Little Mermaid as part of the party and give everyone popcorn.
TanyaWe did rice krispie “sushi” with fruit leather and swedish fish.
MariaMany times, I find a backdrop on the internet I like for one of the kid’s themed parties, go to the thrift stores or dollar stores, Walmart, etc buy the supplies and recreate it. A lot cheaper. I usually have most of the supplies anyway.
Those dollar store tablecloths come in different colors and make great base for backdrops.
This I made with streamers I had and construction paper for the leaves.
It was a jungle theme party for my nephew.
MadisonMaking bead bracelets would be fun if you could find some cheap ones that look like pearls and shells.
You could also hide shells in sand and have them find some. Bubbles are also usually a hit at that age.
TammyTake pages out of a mermaid coloring book & let the children pick out their favorite & have crayons to color, pin the tail on the mermaid game, have the kids show up in the mermaid theme, have a contest who.
Who swam the farthest, who saw a blue ship on the way, how many orange ships were there, who saw a flounder, have a sea theme treasure hunt.
Don’t miss: I want to live frugally but have absolutely no idea where to start!
LibbyI would go to the dollar tree they have tons of mermaid stuff just pick your colors to match.
RenaeDollar tree should have sea shell Easter eggs this time of year.
ColleenPinterest had a few fun ideas we are thinking of doing. Mermaid Bingo, photo stations, Scavenger Hunt, a mermaid jewelry box, pin the tail on the mermaid.
Definitely bubbles from a pretty cheap bubble machine.
ScarletWatch Little Mermaid and popcorn. Invite guests to come as mermaids (or mermen) which will add a ton of ambiance. Seaweed limbo (decorate a broom with streamers). Blow up blue balloons and play “keep off the ocean floor”, fill a large container with sand and dollar store gems or other things and dig for treasures in the sand.
Send home individual bags of goldfish crackers or bubbles as a party favor.
JuliaOn a cardboard outline a mermaid with an open head hole. Have them decorate then take their pics in head opening.
KatrinaDo a spin off game of Ariel making up what common objects are for(eg forks for combing hair), and have them guess the object.
DanielleI once made a goldfish cracker trail mix and put it in a fishbowl. Cheese fish, pretzel fish, cupcake fish and m&ms.
AnnetteLook at Michael’s for silicone bracelets and shells with a Clasp, let them choose colors and make their own as the take home gift. And yes, bubbles!
RosalindI just did a princess party for my 5 year old. I had all these activities planned out but the kids had more fun just running around, playing with my daughter’s toys and jumping on the trampoline. Here’s what we did: makeup and nail painting, bracelet making, made magic wands, decorated cupcakes, decorated crowns, rainbow piñata and we made a castle out of a tv box the kids got to color in.
Goodie bags had rings, necklaces, nail polish etc. It was a little chaotic and not as coordinated as I hoped but still a great party. Hope you can get some ideas from that. Most everything bought from dollar tree, hobby lobby and Walmart.
Also, fyi I would plan something pirate themed too in case any boys come. I had 3 boys show up unexpectedly and had to throw stuff together for goodie bags for them and scrambled to find boy stickers for the crowns, and instead of magic wands they made swords.

JanetStart with Balloons with streamers hanging from them = jelly fish, Color fish and glitter glue and have kids make a “school”, “What is your Mermaid Name” game, Find the Pirate treasure ( decorated shoe box with a few coins and candy in it scavenger hunt) game, Star shaped cookies they can decorate themselves – whipped cream cheese, peanut butter and chopped peanuts or crushed cereal make great sea star decorations for cookies. “drift wood pretzel, shells and cheese, PB and J cut into stars, carrot stick crab legs.
