Something just occurred to me. Kids can stay on the parents insurance until they’re 26. But what if you turn 65 before then? I had my twins at age 44. I plan to retire at 67 and they will only be 23 then. I’ll have to be on Medicare, so will they be off my insurance? From age 65 to 67 when I’m still working, can they still be on my employer’s plan?
I am a single mom working a corporate job with very good benefits. Their Dad has his own small company, not sure what his health insurance situation is, but I’m sure he won’t want to pay for them. (My ex is younger, so technically he could put them in his plan, but ACA might be cheaper.)
CarrieI don’t want to be a Debbie Downer but my mom and MIL both passed at 62.
I would make sure you have life insurance or enough savings to help them with those costs if need be.
I hope that is not the case for you but better safe than sorry,
ChristineI can answer the question about the employer insurance, yes they can remain on your employer plan if you are still working fulltime and still enrolled in the employer plan.
I have had several employees at work that are medicare eligible, but still employed fulltime and stay on our plan and hold off of Medicare until they officially retire.
Don’t miss: What do you plan to do for health insurance in the US before you get to Medicare?
AliNot really helpful, but just disappointing to hear of another father that doesn’t want to pay for his kids and leaves it up to the Mom to figure out. My ex let my kid’s insurance lapse and didn’t even tell me until I couldn’t get any doctors appointments.
Hasn’t paid a penny for them in years. Cheers to the fierce single FI Moms.
WilmaI plan on having my son on a Obamacare plan, once I stop working in the next year or two, and he is only 20. I will stop claiming him as a dependent starting with the 2023 tax year. He is a college student, so his income should be relatively low, and therefore, his health insurance reasonably priced we live in Massachusetts (we’re Obamacare started as Romney care ), where things like this appear to be relatively easy, good health care, good health plans, etc.
ConnieYou don’t have to apply for Medicare at 65 if you’re under your employer plan. Yes, they can stay on until they’re aged out. If they’re college bound, they should explore college health plans as well. And after, if they’re gainfully employed, most likely their employer will offer them coverage plans too.
