I need advice please. We just added our teenage daughter to our truck insurance policy with Allstate and we are paying almost $500 a month!!
That is way too much for one truck!
Any tips or advice on where to go for a better rate?Tia.
PatriciaTry Root ins. We have 1 car but 3 drivers, including 1 teen driver. We have double state minimum, full coverage, a 250 deductible and pay 264/mo.
LaurenI just switched from a less known insurance carrier to Progressive and saved $252 on 6 month policy. Full coverage
StaceyOn this note, is it cheaper to add a teen when they turn 18? (Have two boys)
WandaIt’s too late for your family but maybe this will help others. I didn’t let my kids get a permit at the traditional age because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to afford to add them on my insurance the next year when I would be required to.
I held off and had them but their own used car and get their own insurance when they were able.
Angela1. Pay for driver training . In my state if they had 6 hrs or more of driver training there is a discount.
2. Ask if your insurance has a good student discount.
The discount in my state equated to about $300 a year discount.
NancyI swear by erie insurance. Just send your first page of the policy to terra insurance and they’ll get you the best rates.
They saved me so much when I had a teenager (male).
LainaIt might depend on where you live, but we’ve found that GEICO has been the cheapest insurance here for new drivers.
SuzanneCall and independent agent in your state, me offering advice from a different state doesn’t get you anywhere, but if you can call and agent that has access to lots of different companies they can help find you a better rate
AgnesMaybe an insurance agent could help. They could work with you regarding your driving record and other factors that could give you the best bang for your buck .
DarlaWe have Allstate and our daughters took the teenSMART advanced driver safety program which saved us quite a bit of money through the years.
It can be laborious but it make our girls better drivers! It’s NOT easy or a blow-off.
We made sure they took driving and the course seriously.
Our daughters also had a good student discount and we increased our deductible to $1000.
JennI saved big time when I added my daughter and switched to progressive. I went through an agent and she found me the best deal.
NatalieTeenage? 16,18,19? Yes the age matters. If you are in a state and 18 is the legal age, consider getting them off your policy and get them their own policy, place the vehicle in their name.
Reduces your risk of them having an accident and you being sued.
If they are not recognized as legal age and able to have their own policy, check with smaller ins companies/ independent agent
NellAsk what is the cheapest vehicle to add her on, she can still drive the truck and if she has good grades she should get a discount for that as well.
Some also offer discounts for driving classes.
RebeccaWhen our kids were younger we were all part time drivers on each others insurance and it saved some money Ask your agent
ElizabethAllstate is expensive insurance, even if you have a perfect driving record and no teens in your house. Shop around.
TristiaCall your agent and see if there are good student discounts available. I was also able to get my premium down by paying for my kids to go to a driving instructor.
ABWatch if you cut liability coverage. A driver with less than one year experience has a 1 in 4 probability of getting in an accident in a 12 month period. The owner of the car is responsible for financial consequences of the car’s operation.
JeffAllstate doesn’t do well with young drivers. At least that was our agent’s explanation. After over 20 years we had to leave. Went to progressive.
MelissaIt’s not the truck. It’s the teenager. The number of teens (15-20 yo) in car accidents continues to increase.
The number of fatality crashes are highest in this age bracket.
RobinWe paid cash for used cars for our boys, got multi car discount & they were rated only on their own vehicle, carried liability only
EdithI work for State Farm and it’s actually very competitive for youthful drivers.
Of course it may vary by state, but based on what I’ve seen it’s worth a shot.
If she’s a full time student with a good gpa, and there’s a small course she can take for a other discount
SavyAsk if you can make her an occasional driver, if they offer good student discount, or if she took any driver courses that could help.
It is important to make sure she has some sort of insurance history because if she doesn’t she will end up paying more when she goes off on her own insurance.
