i have a 7 year old that needs quick to eat snacks and breakfasts so freezing fruit cant be done vegetables would be fine to freeze though.
Since they need to last throughout the school day without refrigeration, what are some tips or techniques to prevent them from wilting, browning, or getting mushy?
Any suggestions on how to store them, prepare them, or pack them in a way that keeps them tasty and appealing would be greatly appreciated!
I’m going grocery shopping Monday and need ideas on how to keep veggies and fresh fruits longer in the refrigerator .
MonaDo not wash fruit first and place in glass jars in fridge.
GloriaI use the Debbie Meyer green bags. They keep vegetables fresh for a long time. Anything I cut up, I store in glass jars.
PatriciaDon’t wash anything until you’re going to use it. Except the lettuce. I take the stump out, wash the lettuce in the bunch, then let dry.
Put in a large plastic bag w/ a couple of paper towels and it lasts a good while.
SuziStore everything you can in glass not plastic. just curious but why can you freeze vegies but not fruits?
some berries, grapes, and even bananas make great snacks for kids and adults when frozen!
FayWrap celery in foil, but keep it whole and just remove what you need. And please no comments about using foil.
DarlaI use fruit jars. Good ol fashioned glass stores better and keeps fruit fresh longer. I was the berries.
Let them air dry on a towel them place in jar. Shelf life is much longer.
MaryMason jars are awesome to keep berries, cut veggies & many fruits & veggies fresh
DeniseSoak in vinegar baking soda water, 10’ is what I soak for. Good cold rinse. Air dry on a towel.
Put in Mason jars.
DarlaI shop for produce on Sundays and we eat the foods that are least shelf stable first.
Blueberries, grapes, and apples are the most shelf stable for me and last the longest. We try to eat strawberries by Thursday.
My husband eats bananas daily.
I buy the greenest bananas that I can find so they last through Saturday.
LindaWrapping paper towels around your fruits and veggies. Keeps the moisture out.
SusanI suggest a dehydrator. You can get a good used one for $20-$30. All that fruit can be dehydrated into fruit chips or even fruit roll ups.
Great way to use up that overripe fruit.
Also, vegetable chips are wonderful as well.
MicheleThis one is amazing. Strawberries- do not wash or get wet. Take a Tupperware container and put a paper towel on the bottom. Cut off the stems.
Put strawberries into Tupperware, cut side down, not touching any others.
Don’t wash until you want to eat them. Usually Lasts for a couple weeks.
SandraGet some large glass jars. Fill with water and immerse avocados (I get another full week to use), immerse celery, you can get 2-3 weeks more. Green onion submerse root ends only.
All else I buy frozen veggies.
Only Iceberg lettuce stays longest, would love hint for other kinds.
KellyI keep all berries in tupperware-like containers with sealing lids. They keep fresh so much longer.
