Popcorn on the stove…..
How do you do it? I have tried a few different recipes that have not been great.I use basic vegetable or avocado oil and corn, but my issue is that I can’t get it crispy like the bags.
Any tips?We do not use butter (allergy) nor olive oils (low smoke point), I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
MelissaPut oil in the pan and add three popcorn kernels. Shake it around a little until they pop then add the rest of the popcorn.
The oil will be the right temp and will pop quickly.
Take the lid off as soon as you are done popping.
SusanMake sure the corn kernels are not old, they need a high moisture content to pop to a fluffy size.
DebMake sure your lid has a vent or use a frying screen so the moisture can be released.
SweetI make this every night. I just pour some vegetable oil into a large pot until the bottom is covered. Then I add in popcorn kernels, also until the bottom is covered in a single layer.
I eyeball everything. Then I turn the stove burner onto high, put a lid on the pot and shake it for about 3-5 minutes while it pops.
Once the kernels stop popping, or slow down a lot, I turn off the burner, pour the popcorn into a bowl and sprinkle some salt on top.
I love it, but it’s nothing fancy, so maybe not what you are looking for! Good luck!
JudyCouple things: put one kernel in the heating oil. When it pops, dump the rest in.
Hold the lid on the pot so that it gets a bit of air and shake until the popping slows and/or stops.
You’ll notice a difference
LaurieI buy bulk corn kernels & make popcorn in the microwave. Works great. We also grind the kernels for corn meal.
MaryI have a microwave thing for popcorn. Got it at a thrift store. It’s great. Just put a bit in it, put the lid on it and microwave until the popping slows.
No oils needed.
I know it’s not what you asked about, but it is super easy and no oils added.
DedeI pop with a splatter screen and a paper towel on top. Crispy crunchy – not soggy popped corn every time.
SueIt’s important to tilt the lid to let steam escape. A big pot is best. Frequently shaking the pot over the element.
LinYou can microwave popcorn in a glass dish with a lid, no butter or oils needed!
ShannonHow much oil are you using? You only need enough to cover the bottom of the pan.
ClaudettePut popcorn in brown paper bag in microwave. No oil, pot or anything else needed. Can buy a microwave popcorn container also.
BrendaI don’t use any oil I just get the pot nice and hot. And then add the kernels
GailI use olive oil. On a gas stove with the stir/popper pan. Turns out perfect. Crispy and then melt butter in the same pan and pour over popcorn and salt.
I prefer white popcorn, but both pop well.
KayUse bacon grease. The more grease the better. Season with garlic salt. Or if your feeling spicy add some cayenne
JennyMy mom pops white kernel Jolly Time Popcorn in a combination of Smart Balance Spread (and lots of it) and Smart Balance Oil.
Once done all you do is add salt. It’s delicious!
LindaMake sure you’re using a large pot. The more surface area the better. The rest of these suggestions are good too.
But don’t use a small pot
Crunch crunchJeannieYou may be using too much oil. Just use enough to coat the kernels, not floating.
JackeeI use a stir crazy popper. Oil and two kernels. When they pop I add the rest.
DebHot oil helps make the popcorn crisp – I do three kernels and when they pop add the rest of the popcorn… might be worth a try.
I also picked up a whirly pop pan at. the thrift store… I love that.
RachelIt won’t be. If you want kernels to be light and fluffy, buy an air popper. They’re relatively inexpensive.
You can toss with flavorings afterward or dip each kernel as you eat it so it stays fluffy.
MichelleCoconut oil! Trust me! Also buy the Flavacol salt that theaters use. It’s a huge container for like 10 bucks.
DonnaI have a silicone rubber paper for the microwave. I love it. It’s no mess, no oils, no shaking the pot, etc.
I just put in 2 scoops, cover, microwave for 3.5 minutes…. And voila! Beautifully popped corn (very few if any unpopped kernels).
it was around $14.00 on line. I’ve had it for about 5 years and it’s like new.
The no mess and no oil aspects of this method, make it perfect.
