In 2000, I opened a traditional IRA at a credit union and I made contributions to it for several years.
Up to 2015, I unfortunately kept little to no records of the contribution amounts and/or whether I deducted the contributions when allowed or filed form 8606 if/when needed…
I blame it on me being young and dumb at the time Does anyone have any helpful advice/input as to how I could go about figuring out or putting together such records for the approx.
15 years I was not a smart recordkeeper. Note that in 2018 and 2019, I transferred my IRA funds to Fidelity and I now keep great records!
Also, I already contacted the credit union for any info they could provide and their records were sadly unhelpful because it was too long ago.
Thanks in advance!
JamieThe credit union would’ve transferred the contributions information to fidelity when they transferred the assets to fidelity. Who did your taxes?
They might still have copies.
If you did them, and used a software or online app, check there or on your computer (unlikely you still have a computer from that far back).
LucianoTake a best guess approach if the records are no longer available. Try to be as honest as possible and write down notes as to how you came to the figure in case youneed to explain your situation.
