We were given canned yams in syrup . How can I use them or fix them?

I am not a fan of the marshmallow sweet potatoes so please help .

Don’t suggest donating because I need to use these as there was no income for 3 months and this is what I have

Have most dry and canned pantry items and spices .

I also have most basic meats like chicken, hamburger ,sausage

You could rinse the syrup off, season and roast with chops.

Rinse and mash, use like mashed potatoes

Sweet potato casserole. Most recipes for this call for pecans, butter and brown sugar as a topping but I’ve substituted oat meal for the nuts and it is still good.

This can be a side dish or even dessert.

I would drain and rinse and put them in the blender, then saute onion, a little garlic in butter.

Add ginger, nutmeg and cayenne pepper.

            Stir together over low heat.

            Add cream.

            Makes a yummy soup!

I found a recipe on the Food Network website years ago for sweet potato pudding.

It is kind of like a soufflé but easier.

I replace the topping with one more like you would make for an apple crisp because of an allergy.

It calls for fresh baked sweet potatoes but I have used canned and it tastes just as good.

My family likes it better than any other type of sweet potato dish.

It pairs well turkey. And in my opinion makes a tasty breakfast the next day.

Can’t you give away things you don’t like to the food pantry and exchange them for things you do like?

I am sure the food pantry would have no problem with you doing that because there are others who like canned yams.

Then you wouldn’t have to punish yourself when you are already down.

Cook them on the stove top. Add cinnamon, butter, sugar or honey and enjoy.

If you like them less sweet, add a pinch of salt and more cinnamon.

You can also try rinsing them and adding hot sauce or salsa. Sounds weird, but I love yams and sweet potatoes with chili paste, soy sauce and lime, or salsa.

                        Hot and Sweet.

Drain ( save syrup for another dish), butter a cake pan. Maah yams in the bottom of cake pan top with cooked rice ( white, brown or wild rice) rope this layer with sausage that has been partially cooked.

                          Season how ever you want.

Put in oven at 350 until sausage has finished cooking.

You can use them instead of pumpkin in any recipe for bread, muffins or pie

I would drain them into a colander, gently rinse off the syrup a little bit, then heat on the stove and mash with milk or butter and a little salt.

Maybe some curry powder if you have it.

Alternately, you could drain, mix with a a few scrambled eggs and breadcrumbs, and make baked croquettes or patties in the oven or air fryer, or in a skillet with oil if you don’t mind actually frying stuff.

I just hate frying stuff at home even though I love fried food.

Make sweet potato hash for breakfast. Cut and fry with a couple cubes potatoes and some onion serve with eggs

Heat them up with some of the juice and add some butter. We add a little sugar while cooking

You can use them as a sweetener in recipes. I use steamed sweet potatoes that way.

There are sweet potato based brownie recipes out there or you could make a a bread like banana bread only with sweet potatoes instead of bananas

You can make empanadas out of them. Rinse the syrup off and mash them, then put them inside of biscuits, soak them in butter and cinnamon and bake according to pack instructions on the biscuits.

They come out awesome as long as you put enough cinnamon on them.

Other than that you could always make mashed potatoes out of them and put the cinnamon on them that way.

Soak some raisins and some warm water for about 5 or 10 minutes then drain.

Drain all or most of the liquid off your yams, place in saucepan, add a splash of vanilla to taste, add the raisins.

Mash it up like mashed potatoes if you want to do that before adding the raisins LOL Dash of cinnamon if desired.

                                        And warm it up.

Can be eaten with dinner or almost as a warm breakfast cereal.

They also go good with pineapple.

Rinse off the syrup and cut into cubes, sprinkle with coarse black pepper and cook in the air fryer.

For regular sweet potatoes I bake in skin then squish out of skins, loosely mash (aka vaguely slice with a fork) in a lasagne dish, dot with 1/2 stick butter, bake again , more thoroughly squish, sprinkle with maybe 1 tbsp brown sugar and more liberally squish;, bake again briefly.
