Who does the credit card flight reward ‘hacking’? I heard about it on a recent podcast episode and was intrigued because we have been a one credit card family for 20 years.
It’s helped boost our credit and I would have never thought of getting cards just for flight points (mostly since we travel only for work & the company buys the tickets).
But now that our investing business is growing and we are getting flights for ourselves, I’m wondering where we need to start to get those points rolling.
RickI did it heavily for 3-4 years but have slowed dramatically for last 2. I will restart soon though.
I find airlines cards as moderate. I don’t get much benefit from the free checked bags most of them offer as we are backpack travelers most trips.
I have also found flight sales are frequent enough that I don’t use airlines points as much as expected. So again moderate benefit for me.
I have found the transfer partner cards like chase sapphire and cap1 venture families of cards of much much higher value.
So, me personally, I would go transfer partners cards all in on that to start but afterwards yes airlines cards can be very nice points grabs.
KevinWe’ve done it for years. Have enjoyed multiple trips to Europe and the Caribbean with free flights!
KimSome people open the new cards every few months. I personally don’t do that nonsense. But I do use my JetBlue card for everything under the sun and it gives my family a few free flights per year.
Because the more you spend and fly, the higher your status and in turn the higher points accrue for you so for me it works to keep putting all my eggs in that basket rather than open 18 other cards.
MartinaI can’t remember the last time I paid for a flight. I open credit cards just for the signup bonuses.
LindsayYes, been doing it for 13 years and redeemed about $500,000 worth of free travel. Brought me to 78 countries and changed my life.
So many bucket list experiences I otherwise wouldn’t have had.
KiratianaI do it. I manage it with YNAB. I typically fly internationally 4 times a year and pay no more than $1000 plus credit card fees.
NateYou’ve been flying for work and don’t have frequent traveler programs setup? Day 1 for all my new hires I make them sign up for every one there is.

HieuCredit card travel hacking is a rabbit hole that leads into a whole different kind of world that goes against whatever Dave Ramsey teaches.
But yes it is true that you can travel the world for “free”.
