I’ve often wondered how long eggs are good after the sell-by date listed on the carton. While I know that eggs can last for a while in the refrigerator, I’m unsure about the exact timeframe when they’re still safe to eat.

I’m also curious if there’s a difference between the sell-by date and the expiration date, and what signs to look for to know if eggs have gone bad.

Do you have any tips, personal experiences, or reliable guidelines for determining the freshness and safety of eggs after their sell-by date?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

A long time. I just crack them into a bowl one at a time and smell them.

You can float test them. Drop the egg into a cup of water. If it sinks, it’s good. If it sinks slowly, it won’t be good long.

          If it floats it’s bad.

If you crack it open and it smells funny or it’s watery – toss it. Otherwise, it’s fine.

I put them in a large bowl of water. If they lay flat on their side, they’re still fresh.

If they stand up but stay touching the bottom of the bowl then they’re getting older but are still safe to eat.

              Best for hard boiled eggs.

If they begin to float at all, they should be discarded.
