Okay, frugal-istas. I’m in a bind that even Dave Ramsey would nope out of. I need your very best life hacks right now to survive. We’re a family of 5 that’s starting a beans and rice lifestyle for at least the next year.
I’m needing to save money on light, water, phone, and internet bills (we have to have internet because we homeschool, so not optional), as well as ideas for any side hustles I could do as a SAHM.
We have no family, and childcare is through the roof in my area. I feel pretty confident in what we spend on groceries, but I’m open to tips there, too. We’re in an airbnb trying to find a place to live, so tips for saving on housing/rent, too. We’re also in the Fort Worth area if it makes a difference.
Only debt we have is medical, we’re otherwise in the clear.
AngelaWhatever you do, please do not fall prey to those trying to get you into an MLM (ie Doeterra, Amway, Young Living, etc).
I have had countless friends in similar situations fall prey to those who see someone who is vulnerable, needing extra cash.
Most of these companies don’t pay out but pittance and require a hefty startup fee.
MelissaThis may be counter-intuitive, but have you considered adding a student to your homeschoolers for a daily rate?
I’m a single mom working full time and want my daughter to be homeschooled, but I personally won’t be able to do it, so I’m always on the lookout for another family who would let me pay them to add my kiddo to the mix.
I’m in PA, otherwise I would be asking you this directly!
VictoriaOne mistake I made was paying my medical bills before making sure I had enough to eat and live on. Make sure you’re paying those bills last.
ShannonLet me preface and say, no judgment here: is homeschooling a must? Just wonder if income could increase/child care costs could decrease if kids were in school, at least temporarily.
Affordable connectivity program for internet is a great resource to look into, as well as SNAP benefits if you qualify and HEAP.
DarbyDicks Sporting Goods is hiring a number of remote positions right now. I would also try Amazon Flex (take the kids with you if they’re too young to be at home) and customer service wfh positions, especially insurance carriers.
Good luck – it’s embarrassing but you’re confronting it and thats what matters.
ShellyNever be embarrassed. There’s a lot of people in your shoes.
