Think about battery life on my Tesla. I’ll exceed the warranty on the battery next year and while they should last 300k without replacement things could happen and the cost could be 10-20k.
I recently discovered extended coverage battery insurance and I was curious what peoples thoughts were. Seems like it could be a smart safety net.
ETA yes I’m aware over the average you will lose money having insurance.
I also imagine a lot of people have house and car insurance.
ScottFirst I would double check the actual cost to replace the battery – there’s rumors around the internet that seem absurd but I also know it’s not cheap.
But there’s a big difference between 10k and 20k.
JasonNo thanks.. I owned an 8 year old Nissan Leaf. I bought it used. It had only lost a bit (like 20%) since new… and that was O L D first gen stuff.
You’ll be charging more, not replacing the battery.
Guessing you are never using max range for your trips.
TomášI wouldn’t pay … we have vw eup year 2014 with smallest battery and range 60km in worst winter and 115km in best weather … around 120 000km on it …
and battery is running like new I think 10% degradation … I would say the battery will outlast the car
KentThe general rule of insurance is that if a company is willing to sell you insurance for $X, it’s because the insurance is worth less than $X.
CaitlinMy concern is if the time comes and the insurance rejects the claim. The $10k value is low enough you could save that up over 10 years…
house insurance is because of the $400k home value, I can’t just replace that outright.
EricFrom my research on battery life, I would not buy extended battery insurance.
Markwe had a sudden HV fault in our 2018 XP100DL+. Thankfully the HV battery was replaced under warranty, but the car would not move an inch.
It would not let us shift out of park in our driveway. Certainly unexpected.
WendyWe have 100,000 miles on our 2018 model 3. We’ve dropped to 275 as a full charge from a high of 311.
Apparently we’re in the bottom 1/3 of people – so, worse than average.
Albert2018 Tesla 1st Edition here. LR battery, RWD, Autopilot, only about 40K miles driven. My battery went from like 315 to max of 297 now.
I personally think it’s better to save that money and just invest/save it towards the price of a 2-3 yo used replacement LR Tesla that will have a way larger battery capacity eventually.
The values of used Teslas will continue to plummet.
I plan to drive mine at least 5+ more years unless battery rapidly plummets below like 250 or so
GennadiyDouble check if you’ll be able to get extended warranty after you pass 100k miles, I was not able to.
JuliaI’m at 80k on mine-it would be my luck that once I hit 100k my battery would die so when I’d normally pass on an extended warranty-I’m strongly considering it in this situation-
CarlyMaybe the money you would pay into insurance, put it in a HYSA/ battery replacement fund
