Is it cheaper to make or buy yogurt? Milk is already expensive so I can’t figure out if it’s even worth making my own or not.

Also silly question: does a gallon of milk translate to a gallon of yogurt?

I’ve made some the traditional way and know it’s about equal in volume but not sure about the instapot.

I use NIDO brand dry whole milk. Two quarts reconstituted in my instapot, a cup of any brand plain yogurt with active cultures.

Start it before I go to bed.

By morning it’s usually cultured enough but I have been known to forget it resulting in a more tart product.

Depends. You need to know exactly how much milk is required to make it, and how much does it make. Then look at cost of milk and cost of buying yogurt.

I can’t recall details but I know that I’m in Canada a 4 litre (gallon) is $8 bucks.

I can buy one litre of yogurt on sale for $3 Greek yogurt for $4. I’ve no use fir a bunch of buttermilk.

I use powdered milk or canned milk with a splash of lemon juice if I need that. So no for me it’s not worth it.

If u look at the pot set yoghurt which are more expensive yes it’s cheaper making ur own from milk and cultures.

Unless you’re buying some store brands then it’s definitely cheaper to make

Yes! All you need is 3/4 cup of Greek yogurt and you’ll have unlimited yogurt if you leave some to make more.

It takes a long time but it’s a very easy process

Time commitment is usually the biggest hurdle. I typically buy one small single serve yogurt, typically less than $1 (non flavored/no junk).

Then 1 gallon of milk. So about $4.50 or so.

I’ll add some NFDM to add protein to each 1 quart sanitized mason jar.

If you buy store branded greek yogurt, you’ll be at $7.00 or more. So, you come out ahead. Then I’ll use the yogurt to make the next batch.

So, $8 ish instead of $14 for every two gallons of amazing yogurt.

So, I think it can add up quick if the family is going through yogurt.

                      Milk here is $5-$7
Yogurt can be 3 containers for $5. You might need to try it to see if it’s worth it

2.89 for gallon of milk..only use 1/2 cup of yogurt…but you also after to strain the whey after that 12 to 18 hr rest period.

I make my own Greek yogurt because I know what is on it… some yogurts have so many ingredients instead of only, whole milk & live cultures… Just saying…

Cheaper. It’ll cost you the cost of the milk. If you strain it for Greek you get all that whey. You can use the whey in cooking, baking, or to help your garden.

                            It also freezes well.

The yogurt I would buy is about $5-$6 a quart. I can get at least 2 finished quarts from a gallon of milk.

Milk is roughly $3 a gallon here

My recipe calls for 5 cups of milk for 7 five ounce jars of yogurt.

If I want fancy yogurt (grass fed organic), it’s far less expensive to buy a half gallon organic grass fed milk at Aldi than to buy the yogurt.

I get two quarts yogurt from one carton.

I like it better than store bought.
