My bf & I got into a disagreement yesterday. We’re cutting down costs due to my medical bills being high (having Lyme disease is not cheap).

I told him let’s start unplugging items that are not being used everyday to save on electric bill. He says it doesn’t matter if it’s plugged in, it’s not drawing a lot of electricity. I said that’s not true at all!

I have been unplugging my electronic appliances/tv/etc for over 30 years, closer to 40 I suppose….it DOES make a difference…the phantom electricity that the plugged in plugs hold does add up. I have a 2bd/2ba home 1000 sq ft home…as does my neighbors….

My highest bill in the summer – we are in for 3 weeks of triple digits temps so far – is $67.

My neighbor is $134….and we both use AC in the summer…in the winter my bills run about $22 a month.

We have gas heat and that runs about $40.

Yes your electric company will have some great insights for you.

Generally big power users create heat, create cool, or run a motor. But objects definitely draw energy when plugged in.

They call it “phantom load” – unplug things like TVs, computers, etc that draw electricity while shut down so they can start up fast. Or get a smart power strip! You got this!!

Ha! He is wrong. I have everything unplugged or off if I’m not using it. My electric bill in winter is $15-20 and my bill in the summer because I use AC is $68

My power company sends me a useage report. A % of my bill is for “always on” electronics.

I know this isn’t the question, but please make sure you are applying for financial aid through your doctor/hospital if they offer it.

Make sure to ask each office about applying, and always ask if they offer a prompt pay discount if you can cover the whole bill.

Most places don’t offer services unless asked, but it’s always worth applying if you can.

Vampire electricity can increase energy bills and have a negative impact on the environment. According to the International Energy Agency, standby power was responsible for about 1% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions in 2007, which is about 33% of the amount produced by global air travel at the time.

                  Anything plugged in draws electricity.
