Is it time to reduce some U.S. stocks?
The S&P 500 is beautiful, magnificent! But with this all-time high, and with elections and fiscal policy changes coming up, isn’t it time to take some profits?I’m 48 years old, have a fat fire net worth, debt free, married without children, living in Portugal.
I have about 75% in stocks, 20% in U.S.
Treasury bonds, and the rest in gold and bitcoin.
I’m considering selling about 15% of my stocks and buying more short-term Treasuries.
Anyone else thinking along these lines?
GoldenHard NO. Let me know when the market is at the top and let me know when the market is at the bottom.
Even the experts from Ivy League schools with PhD this and PhD that can’t tell you.
JeremyThe problem with trying to time the market is that even if you’re right about when to get out, you have to also be right about when to get back in.
More often than not, it ends up better not trying.
PeterI’m 48 with %100 stocks. No plans to change ever. I have no debt so very little risk
TauraiDon’t do anything just stand there like Jack Bogle said
ScottIt’s possible that 75% in equities is aggressive especially if you are shifting to the decumulation stage.
And if you plan to stay in Portugal for the long term some Euro denominated assets might make sense.
That said…the factors you are citing would not in anyway be factors.
You are young and will see many many many different economic cycles over the next 40 years, that should drive your portfolio decisions not those factors.
OzSounds like you’re heading towards 60/40 portfolio. Question is if you move to this new allocation, would it be.
semi permanent move you’d feel comfortable with, say over the next decade?
DamonNope, but in different situation in life. Might be fine for you.
DwayneI like to think of my allocation as a range and not an exact. I like 70-80% in stocks so at times like these I would move to the lower end.
I prefer long term bonds.
Short term bonds will mature and then you may have to reinvest when rates are much lower.
That being said, since 1940 the stock market has gone up 71% of the years we had a democratic president and 70% of the time with a republican president so don’t overreact to the election.
PhilipAll time highs hit about 10-15 times per year in most years…. Why is today different?
Scott48, fat fire, debt free, Portugal? Do what makes you sleep well at night.
