Yesterday while at an intersection, a man came up and started punching/kicking my car, then took off.
he severely damaged my side view mirror.
My initial plan was to simply pay out of pocket and leave insurance out of things so that my rates won’t be potentially affected.
Any reason why I should consider going through insurance that I’m not thinking of?
took it to my mechanic, thankfully only the glass was damaged.
Will have them replace it (not using insurance) for ~$300.
TomIt’s probably cheaper to just pay out of pocket.
Are you in a jurisdiction where the police would do something about this?ChloeIf they code it as comprehensive, there is a good chance your rates will not be affected.
I would call to check.
Some companies don’t change premiums if it’s just comprehensive and some do.
CãtãlinJust buy a used mirror on eBay and then swap the painted cover. What year make and model car do you have?
I can find something for you
LauraJust wanted to warn you to never never ever leave anything of value in your car at all! Not even in a trunk.
(Unless you put it there before you leave a secure location out of eyesight of anyone potentially watching you.
I’ve seen a ton of broken windows over the years, and had an irreplaceable item stolen from my car during grad school in 2006 (thankfully insured but still…).
I also had the window broken for NOT carrying a bag with me inside in downtown SF. (Thief was sure I must have left it behind. I didn’t.
I had only taken my id and couple credit cards with me from home.)
LivWhat’s the point of having insurance if you are afraid of them to actually use it?
Insurance is such a middleman scam.
And yes, I have insurance.
DianeI accidentally broke my own mirror like that once, removed all the old glass (carefully so I didnt cut myself) and bought replacement mirror at Autozone, you may be able to repair your self
NikolasI pay out of pocket for everything minor like this. Car Insurance is a scam already, I don’t want to risk my rates going any higher than they need too
BrianI’d still have your agent take a look they can advise you whether or not it’s smart to get it fixed or just pay out of pocket
JohnCheck the price for the mirror before making a decision. We had a mirror go that had sensors in it for the camera and local dealer wanted ~~$2500.
I found the part at another dealer online for $900 and installed myself.
VyInsurance don’t care if it no fault, they still raise it
So, pay out of pocket. It should not be that bad.
GrettaI just had someone try to break in my car and busted out the window. I paid out of pocket.
I wouldn’t even consider turning it in unless it’s a major repair.
HeatherI’d probably try to pay out of pocket. Was a police report filed? Any other cars damaged in the same area?
LaShawnIs it just the mirror or is there body damage? I’ve broken my glass dozens of times. I finally learned how to pop it in myself.
Paid less than a $100 to replace the last time.
LauraGet a quote and compare that to your deductible and a possible rate increase.
