I would appreciate input from any Texas people with experience with this.
We have been in our current home for 3 years and we escrow our taxes. I just received an extremely large refund from our mortgage company, close to the amount my annual property taxes should be. I reviewed the escrow statement and it shows a projected amount for county taxes, but under “actual” it just shows the an amount for the check they sent me. I checked the tax assessors website and sure enough it says I have unpaid taxes and $800 in delinquent interest and fees.
Obviously I have some calls to make tomorrow but I’m panicking a bit. Do I have any recourse against the mortgage company for these fees? It also shows they underpaid the previous year by $20. I guess I should have been checking up on this, but we’ve had taxes escrowed since 2014 and I’ve never had this issue.
TimOne possibility is that the mortgage company didn’t have the proper address for the taxing authority. When the check was returned to them, they sent it to you.
ChristiIs your mortgage company Mr Cooper by any chance? They totally jacked up my property taxes is why I ask. Took a BBB complaint and over 4 months of fighting to fix it.
TimOur county has up to the last business day tax payment information. We could pay online, if there was a mistake and penalty free upto 30 days or we can do installments as well. Check it out in your county website as well.
