At what age/grade would you start moving from aggressive to moderate when it comes to your child’s 529 account?

I’m considering adjusting my child’s 529 plan from a growth-focused to a moderate allocation, aiming for a balance between growth and security as college approaches.

What age or school grade would you recommend as the best time to make this shift?

I’d love to hear from other parents, financial planners, or anyone experienced with 529 accounts.

What factors did you consider when deciding to reduce risk in your child’s college savings plan, and were there any specific guidelines or milestones you followed?

Please share any insights or advice on timing this transition to ensure both safety and steady growth as the college years near.

      Thank you!

Never. Granted I have a higher risk tolerance than most. But with recent law changes, granting the ability to transfer to a Roth IRA.

My plan is to use this to kick start their retirement accounts. Roth IRA > 529 in my opinion.

I moved 25% each year when they were in high school.

We went and have stayed aggressive before college and during the college years.

Following the advice of the “experts” has been found to not always be the best choice in our experience.

Our current plan is to save my oldest’s 529 funds for grad school, so I’m going to switch back to something aggressive until a year or two before he’ll need it (he’s currently in 10th grade)

Around 4-5 years from college. We were 100% equities. Then switch to 60/40 at that point.

We were thinking of when she’s in 8/9 grade. She’s only 6 so holding it for now
