I am switching to glass food storage containers. Frugal because I will only replace when something breaks.
Looking for suggestions on brands.
So far only Ikea has glass or bamboo lids, trying to remove plastic. Any suggestions?
KasiaHonestly, I found some olives in thick pint jars (kind of looking like Mason jars) and am snacking on them regularly to slowly replace my collection of odd ones… takes some dedication, but since I love olives, it’s just a matter of time…
SarahI wasn’t a fan of the bamboo lids since they molded and can’t be washed often.
I have Pyrex glass with the plastic lid but also just use beeswax covers instead
BeccyMason jars
DonnaBeing Italian American we have lots & lots of big glass jars. My olive jars hold 3-4 cups of liquid.
Hardest part is getting the labels & glue off. I use masking tape to write what the stuff is.
Barley, quinoa, pastina, all kinds of tiny pasta, sugar, flour.
DeborahIn the 50s my family used refrigerator glass containers with glass lids. All of them were heavy.
They switched to Tupperware when it came out. I still prefer glass containers.
The cold glass keeps food better but they are heavy.
I have some Pyrex now, and they are old, but Pyrex is my choice on anything glass in the kitchen.
BlairMy anchor and pyrex have been in service almost 20 years.
MargittaI found Pyrex to be a better quality than Anchor Hocking. Their plastic lids (which you can order seperately) hold up better, too.
However, if you want to get away from plastic, Ikea is your best bet.
BrianPyrex. They aren’t the cheapest, but they have been around forever. You can even just replace the lids when they wear out for not that much.
ScarletI just save glass jars with metal lids. To make it look cohesive wrap the same fabric over top and rubberband over.
AshleeI save all my glass jars from food items that I buy and reuse them. I can even can, in some.
I also use Pyrex glass storage containers.
NeshaMason jars, Pyrex, all sorts of reused jars. You can get silicone lids for those glass yogurt jars.
I have a bunch of Weck jars, which are a European canning jar brand, and they have glass lids.
SusanPyrex ‘Fridgies’ are a really popular thrift item for this exact reason. They are sadly not that frugal anymore though, but if you find them resale they’re great to pickup.
SherryseI love the IKEA ones because you can buy JUST a lid or JUST a dish when something breaks.
Also, I kind of love that you can have a plastic lid but a glass bottom because you can remove the lid to microwave and the food can just touch the glass.
I have the bamboo lids too . . . they are just ok.
They molded pretty quickly. I also second the suggestion for mason jars.
I think IKEA glass containers with plastic lids and mason jars are the best combo!
JustineI use ikea glass containers to store, cook and prep. Whilst the baboo lid was good it wasn’t secure enough.
The plastic ones are best as the clip lock.
I cook food into them and freeze (like microwave meals). Just something to consider.
Luckily I only bought one with the bamboo lids so use it for just leaving food for fridge.
KathyI reuse my glass jars as canisters, food left overs, storing fresh fruit and fresh vegetables in frig, , etc.
LaurelI started buying only square glass containers.
The round ones take up more room on the shelvesCynthiaI bought Anchor Hocking and I am in the process of getting rid of them. I found a big glass chip on the floor, and another in the sink.
I found a couple more with small chips on the edges.
I wanted no plastic, but they are heavy and now dangerous. Very disappointed
K TrinaI purchased some at Target, can’t remember the band but the tops fit several sizes and they have two closers. Inexpensive .
SharonThey freeze well also… just don’t fill full…. Leave space for expansion during freezing
HollyI have the pyrex (but they have plastic lids) but love them as I can bake in them, serve in them and then store left overs in them without having to wash in-between – Cuts down on water waste etc and I use the same bowl/dish to do everything in.
the plastic lids I only use for storage and they last years I buy them at Walmart – got a set of rectangle and 2 sizes of round 3- medium and large.
I do find having everything stored in clear containers is more efficient as I see what I have and make sure I use it up – unlike when leftovers were in containers I could not see in – would forget what I had and it would go bad wasting a lot of food
