Friends moved out of state this past summer and gifted me with all their fridge, freezer and pantry items. One item is an unopened box of instant grits. Any ideas of what to do with them besides the obvious “make grits?” Thank you.

I’m looking to explore the culinary potential of instant grits and would love to hear your creative ideas. Instant grits are versatile and can be enjoyed as a side dish or incorporated into main meals.

I’ve tried the basic preparation, but I’m eager to elevate this ingredient and experiment with different flavors and textures.

What are some unique and delicious dishes I can make using instant grits?

Whether it’s a breakfast option, a comforting dinner, or even an innovative dessert, I’m open to any suggestions.

If you have personal recipes, tips on preparation methods, or even pairing ideas with proteins and vegetables, please share!

Let’s inspire each other to make the most out of this humble ingredient.

Thank you in advance for your delicious ideas!

I love shrimp & grits. Cook the grits in a pot not the microwave. To me, even instant grits need to cook longer & on the stove.

Add s&p, butter & a handful of shredded cheese. I prefer smoked Gouda but have used cheddar. Stir the grits until smooth.

Add the cooked onion & shrimp & any leftover bacon grease in the pan.

Stir until mixed. Serve in a bowl & top with crumbled bacon. Getting hungry just thinking about it!

You can add sugar and milk for hot breakfast cereal.

I would try cooking, then frying in a patty shape. Like fried polenta. You can top it with all kinds of things.

I don’t have a specific recipe. I use grits for chowders and casseroles. Love grits.

I just google until I find something that looks good and works with my pantry.

Usually involves, sausage, shrimp, cheese, sometimes eggs. Savory grits are my favorite

Cook and add to bread dough. I do that all the time with leftovers. Remember that grits and just ground corn and use accordingly.

                      Make cheese grits.
Make grits. Add cheese at the end. Stir in well. Pour into loaf pan and refrigerate overnight.

Next morning. Slice (like bread) dredge I. Seasoned flour.

Pan fry in a bit of olive oil and butter. My kids loved this for breakfast on cold mornings.

Check date. I had some in my pantry that had not reached expiration date. Opened a pack and it was buggy.

Cook, add cheese, spread out in baking sheet. Let cool. Cut into triangles, sear in garlic butter.

Serve as a side with short ribs, pot roast, or sautéed shrimp, as you would polenta.
