Or is it better to just use a 2% cash back card.
I don’t go out to eat, I only get groceries at Walmart, and have a 5% off on gas card. We’d love to stay at hotels more often, so if there was a way I could be racking up points on regular purchases, that would be cool.
JohnI use a Fidelity 2% back for most things to keep it simple. I also have a Costco card that gives 4% back on gas. I don’t travel enough (outside of work) to worry much about travel-related rewards but may explore that later on.
KristiI use the Amex everyday preferred card. You get a 50% bonus on all points if you make 30 or more transactions a month. I personally value points far more than cash back and I like Amex transfer partners the best.
KennethKroger Mastercard for gas and what you buy in store. 2% on groceries and a straight 55 cents a gallon off on gas. If you are insane like my wife and I and can plan your meals out we buy gift cards at 4x’s the fuel points which equates to 14% off for just buying gift cards for resteraunts you will eat at anyway.
The kicker is the bonus point promotions where you can get bonus fuel points for buying a $15 dollar gift card. When going to fill up at the gas station Kroger limits you to 35 gallons a fill up with a 1000 fuel points which is a $1.00 a gallon off.
When we use the Kroger Mastercard it’s another .55 cents off or $19.25 if you take the whole 35 gallon. So, by pre-planning our meals and buying gift cards when we eat out we effectively have $19.25 + $35.00 = $54.25 off every fill up. On top of getting the 2% for buying the gift cards.
You can pull the cars up to both pumps and fill them both up etc.. If you aren’t doing this I wouldn’t recommend the card other than for gas. We fill up 4-5 times a month, so this card alone will save us 60 * 19.25 or approximately 1155 dollars a year just for the rebate. I’ll cancel the card after the 55 cent promo ends and my wife will get one so we can do it for 2 years. After that the rebate falls to 25 cents a gallon etc..
Don’t miss: Don’t forget to use your reward points!
EricaI would say Chase Freedom Unlimited for everyday purchases, I racked up 30k points in 3 months and I’m not a huge spender- just everyday things…so it certainly adds up.
It’s 1.5% on everything and 3% on qualifying purchases, then I transfer the points to the chase travel portal via my Sapphire Preferred to get free flights (just booked one to Paris on points!) and hotels, rentals, etc.
