Can we talk about health insurance after retiring? I don’t like the idea of trying to stay employed just to not have to worry about health insurance in case something happens.
I’m encouraging my husband for us to lead a healthier lifestyle so that we can avoid future ailments if possible.
But things happen so…
for those who have achieved FIRE, what do you do for health insurance or medical coverage etc.
SteveACA. If you can control your income you can keep it affordable.
If I would have known it was so easy I would have retired a few years earlier.SarahHaven’t reached fire but I am putting money in my HSA for this exact reason.
LaurenI will always need really good insurance so in the event I retire early I may have to work 1 days a month or so for my insurance to afford the best ACA insurance.
It sucks but I can’t avoid the costs of being a type 1 diabetic unfortunately.
Be careful of health share plans.
They are a bit sketchy/scammy and are not gauranteed to cover you if something large comes up
Constanceyeah it costs us 1800 dollars a month just for my husband, and you HAVE to have insurance in order to get medicare.
My medicare is 1000 a month for myself, due to his income from his job.
Obamacare goes by your income and if you get no subsidies its expensive.
AaronMove outside of the United States to someplace with reasonably priced health care.
MariaHusband & I retired 2 years ago at 51 & have been using ACA with no problems & very affordable.
HeatherWe’ve never had health insurance offered through an employer.
We use healthcare.gov and it’s very affordable for us.
DavidWe live on cash! And have just enough taxable income to get ACA for 43 bucks a month for my wife.
That’s 1000 deductible and 3000 max out of pocket! Premium silver plan. I use the VA.
MichelleI have been looking in to the ACA. What do those of you do that live somewhere else part of the year?
The plans seem to only cover an ED visit outside of Nebraska.
We live in Ne but have a second home in Florida. What happens if I have to be admitted to a hospital in Florida?
All seems fine in your state.
I understand that out of the country we would have to get travel insurance but I am not understanding what happens if you are out of your own state.
I wanted to find a private insurance that is nationwide for this reason.
MichelleI have an insurance broker who recommended America’s Choice Insurance. It is $687/month for both my husband and I.
So far so good, medications are free, doctors office $50, and no deductibles.
It has been so much better coverage than when I had United for $1200/month.
BonnieWe were able to stay on my husband’s company health plan with only a $50 increase in monthly premiums.
Does your employer offer that?
