After trying to get by with the cheapest oldest iPhone for a while (and just getting frusterated w slowness, etc) I paid 1K for the new iPhone just over a year ago. (and i have a month to month contract w att). Now the apple care the phone has come with has run out. I am now paying $10/mo for apple care (which covers everything except it being lost or stolen). Wondering if anyone has done the cost/benefit analysis of applecare. Maybe there is a cheaper way to get decent phones if mine breaks and I don’t need the coverage?
I also pay $4/mo for my iPad and my husband pays somewhere between $10-$20/mo for apple care for his laptop.
I am tied to apple BC I am in the design industry, FYI.
Thanks!
KrisaI usually pay $200 upfront for 2 years coverage. Then I decide the value of the phone replacement after that. Phones are getting more expensive, so I’d keep the insurance if you’re accident prone or live a lifestyle where it’s likely to become damaged.
I panned to keep the phone for 5 years, so I take all costs into consideration over that projected time period.
JeffYou need $13634 in assets to cover that $34 monthly payment.
Unless you expect to replace a lot of iPhones I’d drop it all and self insure or use a credit card.
TonyAs others have said, paying your bill on a credit card that provides the insurance will give you coverage. Paying out of pocket is a hard pass for me; in 23 years of cell phone ownership I can’t think of a single time I would have filed a claim.
Most phones depreciate so fast it’s not even worth it once the included year of apple care runs out.
KellyWe have it on my daughters iPad and she shatters screens like it’s her job- down to the hardware. For $50 they replace the whole iPad.
RachelHave you ever actually had to use the Apple Care?
If so, do the math of cost vs. how much the repair/replacement would have cost OOP. If you’ve only used it once or twice (or not at all), I’d probably ditch it.
JennyIf you’re accident prone it might be worth it, but I’m pretty sure companies like apple are making $$$ off all the people paying for apple care who never use it.
I’ve only damaged one phone in my life so if I was paying for apple care it’s just throwing money away/unnecessarily increasing the cost of my phone.
RosemarieWhy? We use a credit card to pay the monthly bill that offers free cell phone insurance for loss or damage.
We use Chase Ink but there are several card choices.
