What do you freeze your leftovers in? Ziplocks, Tupperware? Does pasta freeze well? What methods do you use to freeze your leftovers? Do certain foods freeze better than others, particularly pasta?
I’m looking for advice on the best storage containers or techniques to keep food fresh in the freezer.
Also, I’ve heard mixed opinions about freezing pasta—does it retain its texture and flavor after thawing?
Any tips for freezing meals with pasta or other dishes would be really helpful!
BrianPasta with sauce freezes/reheats great.
JeanBoth are inexpensive options. Make sure to date & use before freezer burns. I’m not a fan of freezing pasta I think it turns to mush.!
KatieFoodsaver. For some things I’d recommend freezing them firsts on a plate, then putting them in a Foodsaver bag so they don’t get squashed.
Although to be honest I don’t like freezing my leftovers.
I prefer to freeze ingredients that are ready to go to make a meal really quickly (such as freezing ground beef in 1lb bags, freezing veggies, etc).
That way it’s still really fast but doesn’t have that reheated feel.
Brianvacuum sealer, it’s well worth the investment. getting the air out and sealing the bag makes food last way longer than ziplocks or tupperware can do
PattyI usually vacuum seal my leftovers. Liquids, zip lock bags.
LisaI wrap in Saran wrap and/ or foil and then put in freezer bag (meats, etc). Sauces I put in freezer bag so they freeze flat and I can stack.
Broths and other liquids I freeze in ice cube tray and then put cubes in freezer bag.
Make sure you label bags.
DawnAir tight bag or container and yes pasta freezes well
MelissaUsually freezer zip bags. On occassion I use glass freezer to oven containers
VictoriaI freeze pasta all the time in a freezer container and warm up in the microwave. Comes out great every time.
DenniseI know they advertise you can but I don’t trust my liquids in a ziplock, I use containers for soups/stews unless it’s a small amount, then I freeze in large ice cube trays.
I freeze meat in ziplocks. If it’s leftovers I want to microwave in the same container (like my husband’s lunch) I try to put in glass microwavable dishes so it’s a one step meal.
I do sometimes use microwaveable Tupperware made for than purpose.
Pasta freezes ok except in soup, the noodles continue to absorb moisture so they get weird.
If I think I’ll have leftover soup I keep the noodles separate and we add them to our soup as we use it.
Noodles are definitely fine frozen in casseroles, etc but you might add a bit of water to the container when reheating.
LouiseI use mostly plastic bags. I don’t use much pasta, and I don’t think I would ever freeze it.
MaryOn a side note on pasta. Yes it does freeze well for a short time. As most people say that leftover pasta tastes better the next day, I will let it sit in the refrigerator for that extra day before freezing.
You get that extra day flavor that you don’t get from freezing right away.
HollyI use zip lock freezer bags – some rubbermaid containers – never froze pasta sorry
LindaI always freeze portions of pasta and rice in sandwich bags, then thaw them in hot/warm water, still in the badg..
Don’t put them in boiling water without the bag!
MelanieUsually a plastic container with lid a store bought item came in with a label placed on it… (Cottage cheese, pnut butter….)
LaurenFood containers in a freezer ziploc. Or 2 freezer ziplocs.
FranziskaPasta freezes well. All you have to do is boil some water and put in the frozen noodles!I do it all the time. So, my noodles I freeze in freezer bags.
Anything else that I can warm up in the microwave I freeze in glass containers.
If in plastic, I will be sure the food is cold, and I will not warm it up in any plastic!
EllenI save glass jars with wide mouths and use those
They go from freezer to a cold oven and reheat nicely
Do NOT preheat the oven though bc u could cause the glass to break
And pasta freezesSheilaVacuum sealer- works great. And what I do is I use a heartier pasta. Like elbow macaroni.
I cook it aldente’ Drain/ let it almost cool/add a little butter to the noodles to keep them coated.
Then vacuum seal. When I’m ready to use. I boil the bag I.
Hot water. The noodles will cook in the butter.
No more water.
