Plan to sell some things we can’t move. Plan to move with some furniture. Plan to go through my clothes and shoes and sell things, but how do you move the clothes?
Thanks for all the help.
DeniseI’ve moved 5x in 4 years.
I gather clothes on hangers, slide a kitchen trash bag over, about 15 hangers, then use the tie at the necks of hangers. They are clean, still organized, easy to plop into small spaces in truck. If it’s in a drawer.. leave it in drawer. They occupied dead space.
DarlaWe will retire out of state and will part with 80-90% of our stuff. I’m not paying to move most of it.
As we get older I’m leaning towards simplifying my life so that means the excess decor, winter clothing and professional attire will be donated.
I have no desire to maintain the inventory anymore.
In addition, I won’t leave it for our children to deal with.
I don’t like heavy moving boxes so I will fold into suitcases to move. It’s more work but I find it easier to move.
AngieI’ve moved so many times. I don’t do it traditional ways. I used clothes and towels as packing material to protect dishes and other breakables, then just washed when unpacking. For those I boxed, I put folded clothes in half the box then filled the rest with hangers, so the boxes don’t get too heavy.
I moved once where I just put a trash bag over clothes still hanging (hangers with a hair tie to keep together) but it’s so much easier to move when all your stuff is in boxes.
Wardrobe boxes are easy to pack and unpack, but they are expensive and take a ton more space in your moving truck.
ZanneWhen we moved, we rented a large moving truck. Not wanting to spend even more money on unnecessary boxes, we put the clothing that was in our dressers into cheap garbage bags and put them right back into the dresser drawers. We loaded the dressers onto the truck last, as they served as a “wall” of sorts at the end of the truck.
We moved them into the truck without the drawers and then replaced the drawers once the dressers were in the truck. This not only saved money by not having to purchases boxes for our clothing, but also made “unpacking” so much easier! ~ As for clothing that was hanging in our closets, we simply laid a clean quilt down in the trunks of our cars and carefully laid them, still on the hangers, on top of the quilt.
Hope this helps!
AngieI personally find it worth the investment to buy boxes. Sometimes you can get them secondhand. They are easier to move and easier to pack the truck when they are similar sized. Home Depot has good prices, but I recently heard amazon has them for a good price too.
If you have a lot of books, toss a few into every box so no one box is too heavy.
I pick a room for boxes and move furniture out so that’s the box room. Having all boxes in one spot in a front room or the garage makes it easier come moving time. Especially helpful if you’re hiring movers paid by the hour.
Make sure you have a couple boxes labeled ‘first unpack’ or something for all the stuff you need the first couple days.
I always kick myself for not labeling all my boxes. Don’t be like me!
And, of course, purge everything you can as you pack.
ShantyAir vacuum bags!! Best investment ever. For any clothing & linens. You will be able to reuse them after your move. They’ll stay dust free during your move, and if any liquid were to spill for any reason, they’ll be safer as well.
I keep all my extra linens, sleeping bags, pillows, comforters, winter clothes in air vacuum bags. So they are fresh when I do need them. And also use them when we travel.
NeshaWe got rid of so much stuff! We got most of our boxes used, and we used clothes and linens to pack stuff.
We moved in stages and we used PODS, which is certainly more expensive than renting a UHAUL but about half the price of a full service move.
Then we moved again locally, and we did just rent a UHAUL van for that.
KayFirst and last day box. It has everything you need for First and last days in it I have one for kitchen small one for bathroom and clothes in overnight ba g. Be careful to only use white garbage bags . Black ones have an oil film that can get on your clothes. You cN get clear plastic bags from dry cleaners places they are cheap.
JanetMy kids have moved several times in the past decade. Have always done it themselves with a U-Haul. They were mid/late forties, and exhausted each time LOL two years ago, they moved back home near us. They got PODS, packed them with their stuff, and had the POD (only needed one large one) delivered to their new house. Hired the teen grandkids to unload and carry into the house, particularly upstairs.
I don’t know what the cost was but they said it was the best move they ever made.
Good luck!
KathleenMoved from NYS to Georgia last year. Very expensive! Get rid of as much as you can before the movers show up. Still unpacking and donating to Goodwill. Tied a bunch of hangers together with rubber bands and put.
black garbage bags over them…got rid of tons more clothes once in GA! Save $$.
