UPDATE:so right about a dehumidifier its sooo worth it the smell is almost gone!! Going to look into vent cleaning and mold inspection through insurance

What do you do if your whole house smells like humidity? The smell gets stronger and stronger i have no idea if there is mold we dont see any sort of black spots. Central fan is always on

Any tips on what to do? I dont want to spend so much money on a mold company to come check out the smell! Do they have to rip open all the walls?

      Dehumidifiers are expensive too

A dehumidifier would cost a lot less than mold removal!!

A/c condensate pan or the coils may be dirty. My rig got stinky and it was all fixed by cleaning the coils.

Lowes, Amazon etc. You can get test kits for mold. Dehumidifiers are cheaper than having walls torn out.

A restoration company should come out and do an inspection for free. They will be able to tell you next steps. And your home owners insurance may cover damages.

There are at home mold test strips that can pull mold spores from the air if they’re present.

They look just like a school science experiment petri dish & are not pricy.

Make sure you don’t have stuff stacked up along the wall..I’ve seen where the walls don’t get air…

next thing you know there’s mold by the baseboards

Dehumidifier is worth the cost. It will prevent mold damage.

Open up all your doors to all rooms and all closets. Open up all the windows and doors and turn on all your ceiling fans on a predicted sunny day

Look for used dehumidifiers. They’re out there.

MOLD is not joke. A real health hazard. My BIL had to put a dehumidifier under his house. I don’t know the details of how he did this; but he did.

In our area, it is recommended to put plastic sheeting under the house and to NOT have venting under the house and then run dehumidifiers. Another strategy is AC.

We run the AC at a level to rid the house of humidity; not necessarily our comfort.

For us 74F works for that purpose.

You need the dehumidifier. It’s cheaper than a full scale mold remediation. Set it to 46% and let it run continuously until it shutting off.

Check all your closets and areas where there’s water like the kitchen and bathroom.

Look at the baseboards and ceilings for leaks. You can use damp rid in the closets to absorb moisture

If you have a cellar, is it damp? Do you have a bathroom ceiling vent- does it actually vent to the outside or into an enclosed space like the roof or eaves?

Go around and feel all your walls and floors and look at ceiling for dampness- could be a leak.

A dehumidifier is cheaper than a mold specialist. They work well too.

A dehumidifier is worth it’s weight in gold.
There is frugal and there is cheap. Cheap tends to be an upfront savings with negative long term repercussions.

Frugal requires planning and effort and a judicious use of resources.

In your case, a dehumifyer may be an excellent investment in your future health and comfort as well as prevent long term issues in your home or living space.

Mold is a beotch and takes very little to get started. If you “smell” damp, you have an issue.

Do you know WHY it’s damp?

My folks have an unfinished basement space, that in the summer we run the dehumidifyer – it cranks out water.

In the winter we turn it off and the house is fine.

We find no actual water or signs of damp.

Are you running the central fan with the AC turned to the off position? If so, there is your problem. Fan only doesn’t remove humidity.

I would turn the fan to auto and set the AC cool enough that it comes on at least a several times an hour to remove the humidity.

You can get decent dehumidifiers for under 150. A dehumidifier is way cheaper than a mold company, and yes, the mold can/will grow in your walls, and yes, they will likely have to rip walls out if the mold is bad enough.

You will grow mold if you don’t get the humidity in your home under control.

I run two dehumidifiers in my basement that need dumped everyday. If I miss a day, it starts to smell musty.

Even with the dehumidifiers we still sometimes get mildew.

I can’t imagine what my basement would smell/look like without the dehumidifiers.

Save yourself the headache, health issues, and money, and buy a dehumidifier.

Get down and smell carpets, rugs and upholstery. They may need a good cleaning. Get a dehumidifier or 2 depending on the size of your house.

Afterwsrds you may want to invest in an air purifier.

Check your basement, attic and in closets for mold, too.

Get a couple of bags of regular charcoal and cut the bags open and set them around the worst areas.
