About to hit Coast Fire….
I feel like this will be a challenge for me.
BradleyDo what I did and buy a bass boat. You’ll never have to worry about discretionary income again!
LeaThat seems dangerous to me. Does your FIRE number include the discretionary income? If not, you’ll get accustomed to spending it and then have to cut back again when you FIRE.
I took the other path, I stopped working as much after I hit Coast FI. Now I earn just enough to comfortably cover my expenses working about 24 hours a week. That has challenges too because after years of grinding it’s hard to allow myself to relax and not work constantly, but it’s good practice for eventual retirement.
Don’t miss: Just curious what the consensus thinks about the savings accounts offered at 5.15% through online “Raisin”
JuleMy one concern with Coast FIRE is that there could be the case where you can’t make it to the target date due to layoff, agism, illness, family commitments, etc.
I’d much rather keep the foot on the pedal until the goal is fully attained.
JohnWe didn’t really have a problem adjusting. We work as little as we have to and enjoy our new work/life balance. I guess it depends on what you do with your free time. If you sit around the house you may get bored. We love traveling so spend 7-8 months a year doing that and work a bit when we’re at home during travel breaks.
Having flexible work that we can do only between our 2-4 month long travel trips has been key for us. We would have a harder time if we HAD to work one day a week and couldn’t do extended travels.
