“When it comes to ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water, there are several options available, each with its own cost and convenience implications. Two common choices many households grapple with are purchasing gallons of filtered water or investing in filtration solutions like a Brita container. The decision often boils down to both long-term costs and environmental considerations.
For those who have done the math, are familiar with water consumption habits, or have insights into sustainable living: Based on your experiences or knowledge, which option tends to be more cost-effective in the long run — buying gallons of filtered water regularly or using a filtration pitcher like Brita for the refrigerator? Any insights on the initial investment, recurring costs, maintenance, and overall value would be valuable as I seek an efficient and economical water solution.
ConnieMy water is too terrible to filter. I need a whole house filter and water treatment system and even then… my lines have so much of the residue in them, I still wouldn’t drink my water.
We spend about $50 a month for water to cook with and drinking water.
BarbaraBuying water is a waste, plus the plastic bottles and shipping are bad for the planet. Filter best.
VickiI use filtered water from my refrigerator using just the standard filter. I keep several 40-ounce stainless steel water bottles filled in my fridge so I have cold water when I want it.
I also have a few 24-ounce stainless steel water bottles in the fridge ready to go when I leave the house.
I very rarely buy bottled water.
LindaThe Brita, of course. Buying water in plastic bottles is a double ripoff.
The purchased water is simply your tap water, and it comes in containers that will never decompose.
MelissaMy dad’s water tasted horrible. We bought 2 Britas and extra filters. Poured tap water into one the poured the same water into the other, so it was filtered x2. Tasted great.
We have a filter on our refrigerator and take drinking water and ice from the door.
NicDepends how much the filtered water you have access to costs. For us, we worked out that the Brita was 1/4 of the price of buying the cheapest bottled option.
If there’s a way you can get filtered refills cheaply that might not be the case.
JessicaNumber one: only buy SPRING water. Purified has added chemicals. Brita doesn’t filter as well as they want you to think and leaves behind a lot of contaminates.
Find a local Spring near you. You can Google free Spring water locations online. Water is important!
ReginaIf u mean buying the gallons of water or using Brita, I would say Brita.
JulieThis may not be a feasible solution for everyone, but being the ultra-frugal person that I am, I regularly fill personal water bottles with filtered water from water fountains for free at places I frequent – like my local gym (where I have a free membership btw) and community centers.
Jo LewienI can answer that, it is MUCH cheaper to use a Pur, or Brita than buying water. I found my pur at a thrift store for 5.00 and buy the replacement filters on Amazon for cheap.
Jo LewienBerkey Water system is the most affordable effective home water dispenser. It’s so good it can safely filter pond water!
